National Know Your Flood Risk Week

7th – 11th November

The Know Your Flood Risk campaign (KYFR) is launching their second National Know Your Flood Risk Week on 7th – 11th November 2011.

If you have not experienced flooding at your property it is easy to under estimate the risk. A YouGov survey (October 2010) commissioned by Landmark found that 83% of homeowners do not believe their homes are at risk, while 68% have no measures in place to minimise risk in the event of flooding.

In reality there are many more homeowners at risk than realise it. According to RMS, a catastrophe modelling provider, one in four british homes are potentially at risk of flooding. In addition, people generally associate flooding with living near a river or sea. According to the Pitt Review, surface water run-off was the cause of 60-70% of the 2007 floods and subsequent insurance claims.

National Flood Risk Awareness Week aims to encourage people to think about their own flood risk. Greater awareness allows people to prepare for the worst and minimise their risk using flood protection products. For those looking to purchase a property, it highlights the importance of ordering a property-specific flood risk assessment.

We would advise all solicitors and conveyancers acting on behalf of potential homeowners to consider the risk and recommend they purchase a flood report so they can be fully prepared and aware of the risk involved.
